Pregnant Looking for Work:Can I find a job?

I worked with a well known tax preparation company and was only going to work till April. Now taking this job helped my family even though I knew I was going to have to find a job when tax season was over. Little did I know that I was going have the toughest time finding work because of my “situation”.

At the end of the tax season I found out I was pregnant and now with the seasonal job was gone, was out of work. I went to look for employment the very next day I found out. I looked long and hard and by the time I found a job, I was around 3 months pregnant. Now, this being my second child I knew I was going to show pretty quickly. I did all I could to hide it but within two weeks of my pregnancy they found out and my boss “sneakily” told me that she was taking “take time off” of her insurance brokering business to take care of her “children”. It took them another week for them to give me my check and I filed a complaint, but nothing every came to it. I was unable to completely “define” that I was discriminated against because of my pregnancy status and didn’t feel to well to take it any further. My main focus was to find another job. I knew if I didn’t find another job, we would would have been on the street and homeless that same month.

I then met another insurance agent (now almost four months pregnant) and he hired me. The day I started, I decided to tell him I was pregnant. I knew they would upset was was for certain thought I was out of there looking for another job. By God’s grace they let me stay and I knew I had to make a very good impression for them to keep me there. I was now employed only having 6 more months to work. After my pregnancy I went back to work two months later and was able to use my disability benefits.

Wow. I look at those times and ask how I made it. It was a lot of pressure for me during those times in Los Angeles trying to struggle and work. I had no choice. I actually am happy (looking back) just how that worked out living there for all those years and going through the struggles that I have. It has made me a more wise and ready to survive in any kind of situation. With that said, I know that during these times that many people are struggling trying to find work. I know someone else last year was in the same predicament when she found out she was pregnant and had a struggle just as I have. Should I go look for a job? Will someone hire me pregnant? Is is illegal? I believe that there are a three alternatives that you can do to help to find work when pregnant.

1. Find a temporary part-time/full time job.

2. Find employment as if you where not pregnant.

3. Start a business and work from home.

The stress of finding a job and making an impression can be demanding and then adding with it pregnancy…..almost unrealistic at the time. Again, this is all depending on where you are mentally, physically and emotionally. I know with my first pregnancy I was terribly sick for the first three months and mentally depressed and unfocused, so my husband had to figure out what he could do for us to survive. Many women feel that it is unethical to do so to an employer and feel they are “tricking” the business not telling them what is really going on in their bodies.

Now in these days and times with our economy, everyone needs a job. Babies need shoes…you need to eat and survive.  Do what it takes.  There are alternatives (that I have mentioned earlier) for women that need to work to work. There is nothing wrong with being pregnant and working. In these days it is a necessity. (especailly if you have more than once child) If you don’t feel comfortable working a permanent job, find a temp one. Do what you have to do to take care of yourself and your family.  There is nothing wrong with doing something respectful as working…even if you are prego.  Pregnancy is temporary, but needing a job is not. We all need to work to eat. What somes you when you are pregnant…..you.

The Marathon week.

I had the most challenging week of the year…already.  My schedule is already full with taking kids to school and going to work myself.  It just makes it worse when someone in your family, whether it be your spouse or child, is sick.  This is what happened to me this week. Both my sons Devin and Tyler had this terrible flu that has been going around and I mean terrible.  From 103 degree fevers to only being able to sleep four hours a night for the week has taken its toll on my spirit and mind.  These are times when as a working mother, you wish that you could stay a home. My husband had to take off two hours of work everyday (since I leave work at 3:00 p.m. and he goes to work at 12:30) to keep the kids until I was off of work.  Then it was the fevers and coughing at night that was the worse.  I hate going to work when my children are sick.  It feels like I can not be with them because I have to do “my second job first shift”.  I am glad that they are ok but unfortunately, my husband has also the same thing and is now recovering during the weekend.  May God bless an help anyone dealing with sickness in their families at this time.  It is really hard to get back to my hectic routine but I will be able to manage for this week.

Stopping the Ring around the “Ring Worm”

Ever since my children have been going to school here in Las Vegas they have been getting sick more than usual. From Pink eye to RSV I have had a hard time with working and taking care of them both. Now my little one has Ring worm. My middle son has had it and my daughter but they don’t currently have this terrible annoying skin condition. I have found many interesting things about ring worm from Both my son’s have ringworm. It is not a cool experience but rather a pain.

I have found a lot of information from MedicineNet.com Ringworm is actually know in is medical term as Tinea and there are many forms of it (tinea capitis-scalp ringworm, tinea corporis-body fungus, tinea pedis- feet). The term “ringworm” came from the way the fungus looks on the body and is not a worm. It is a fungal infection that is on the surface of the skin. The way the doctor can determine the infection is by scraping the skin and sending the sample to a lab to confirm. Some of the fungi can be cured by anti fungal cream that can be purchased by any convenient store over the counter (which I am using on my youngest son right now) but if the ringworm is located on the scalp that is another story.

Two years ago my middle son who is now six years old had ringworm that was located on his scalp. I took him to the doctor which confirmed it by scraping his scalp and prescribed him some pills for him to take. What I found out was that these pills could cause some liver damage. Now I could have went to the doctor for another prescription but really wanted to find out if there was another way for him to get rid of the damage with out taking pills. My mother went on a website and found some information that was very helpful. I usually don’t try things that are not prescribed by the doctor, but I was not comfortable with giving him medication that might cause liver damage either.

The thing that finally helped with his condition is called MesoSilver. This stuff WORKS. I also found out that it not only works for ringworm but for other skin conditions such as acne. The directions say to take one teaspoon daily but I used a different method. I actually got a squirt bottle and added two parts MesoSilver and one part water to the mix and sprayed it on his head approximately 3 times a day for 6 weeks or so. His ringworm was so bad that he had a 3 cm circumference where the ringworm took out his hair to the point I had to shave his head. Now you can’t even see where the ringworm was even located. His hair grew back and it is like is was before. I am so happy that I tried this product. If you also have had this same thing with your child or yourself and are interested in using something other than pills or just want to know what other skin conditions click on the link below for more information.

GoCityKids.com: A great place to find outdoor activities for kids

gck_150x60.gif
This is the second week of winter break and the kids are still out of school. They keep on telling me that their toys are now “played out”. Now, I am getting a little irritated about how “bored” they are and that they want other things to do. I have taken a couple of days off of work and I guess I have been in a bit of a funk as well. Usually, I try to get them out the house with the usual activities like going to the park or to the mall. But it is pretty cold and windy at the park so that is one place I don’t want to go right now. Also the mall is full of people back for that “major” sales and to exchange the gifts that they didn’t want or like. That means that mall is too crowded. What else is there to do? Can I get out of my funk and break the routine? So, instead of having them look at t.v. all day or play video games, I remembered there is another alternative.

Six months ago I found this site called www.GoCityKids.com. This site can give any parent a new way to find things to do with the children because it highlights activities that are in a mayor city close to or in your area. Another reason I like the site because it is very user friendly. Many of the activities that are on the site can probably be found in your local newspaper or your city’s monthly activity calendar. Instead of going through all of those sources, you can go to one source and have most of the information at your fingertips on the computer.

First, go to the site and choose your city or the closest city you live by (most of the choices are for major cities around the United States). Second, you can make your selection by choosing the day, the kind of activity that you want to do, as well as something that is age appropriate for your child. I even found activities by how close they are to my nearest cross street! Third, scroll down and find something to do today or within the week. It is just that easy! I mainly use this website to find free activities even though they also have activities that may require a fee. Some people would think that here in Las Vegas it is hard to find child-like activities because this place is known to be an adult playground. Well Las Vegas, the city, has many activities to offer just like in other cities. So today, take the time and go to the site. Find an activity to do that is “out of the ordinary” and get out of the house before they go back to school. You and your children will be happy that you did.
